Introduction
Hernia surgery is one of the most common operations in India, but the price quoted across hospitals can vary by three to four times depending on the technique, mesh, hospital category and insurance arrangement. That variability is exactly why we don't publish a single number on this page.
This guide explains what each part of a hernia surgery bill represents, the seven factors that move the price up or down, and what to look for in any estimate you receive. The numbers themselves are shared in writing after your consultation, so they reflect your actual case.
By the end you'll be able to read any hospital estimate, ask the right questions and avoid the most common surprise charges.
Why we don't publish a fixed price
Two patients with the same diagnosis - say, a right inguinal hernia - can have very different bills depending on the size of the hernia, the mesh chosen, whether the repair is laparoscopic or open, the hospital category and the room class.
Publishing an averaged number tends to either over-quote simpler cases or under-quote complex ones. Neither helps you plan. We share an itemised written estimate after a brief consultation, and we coordinate insurance pre-authorisation through the hospital TPA desk.
If you'd like a real number for your case, book an appointment - in most cases the written estimate is ready at the end of the first visit.
Symptoms & when to seek help
- You have been advised surgery for an inguinal, umbilical, incisional or hiatus hernia
- You want to compare estimates across hospitals before deciding
- You are using insurance and want to understand what the policy covers
- You are paying out of pocket and need to budget realistically
- You want to plan time off work and household expenses around the procedure
Causes & risk factors
- Type and size of hernia (inguinal vs incisional vs hiatus)
- Surgical technique (laparoscopic, robotic or open)
- Mesh chosen (standard polypropylene vs lightweight composite vs biological)
- Hospital category (corporate, mid-tier, trust)
- Room class chosen (sharing, private, deluxe, suite)
- Anaesthesia type and duration
- Insurance arrangement (cashless, reimbursement or self-pay)
How it is diagnosed
- Initial outpatient consultation with a focused clinical examination
- Ultrasound of the groin or abdominal wall when the hernia isn't obvious
- CT scan only when needed for complex or recurrent hernias
- Routine pre-operative blood tests and ECG once surgery is planned
Treatment options
- Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair with mesh - the standard for most adult inguinal hernias
- Open inguinal hernia repair with mesh - sometimes preferred for very large or recurrent hernias
- Umbilical or ventral hernia repair - laparoscopic or open depending on size
- Incisional or complex hernia repair - may need component separation and specialised mesh
- Robotic hernia repair - selected complex cases
- Each option carries its own cost profile, which we walk through in your consultation
Recovery & aftercare
- Most patients are home within 24 hours, so additional room nights are usually not needed
- Take-home medications for the first week are modest
- First follow-up is included in most hospital packages
- Return to office work in 5 to 7 days, full activity by week 4 - minimal indirect costs
- Insurance reimbursement, when applicable, usually settles within 30 to 45 days
Risks of delaying care
- Larger hernias need larger and more expensive meshes
- Recurrent hernias cost two to three times more than primary repair
- Emergency hernia surgery (for strangulation) can cost five to ten times more than elective surgery
- Complications from delayed surgery - bowel resection, ICU stay - escalate cost significantly
