Preparing for Surgery - A Practical Checklist

Introduction

Once the decision to have surgery is made, attention naturally turns to preparation, and good preparation genuinely improves outcomes. Patients who arrive well-prepared tend to have smoother operations, fewer complications, and faster recoveries. The good news is that most of what matters is straightforward and entirely within your control.

This is a practical, step-by-step checklist for preparing for planned surgery. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions for your case, but this guide will help you understand the why behind each one.

The Weeks Before: Health Optimisation

  • If you smoke, stop, or cut down as much as possible. Even stopping shortly before surgery improves healing.
  • Manage existing conditions such as blood pressure and blood sugar as well as you can.
  • Stay gently active, since better fitness supports recovery.
  • Eat well, with good nutrition to prepare your body for healing.
  • Reduce or avoid alcohol, which affects healing and anaesthesia.

The Days Before: Medications, Fasting, Logistics

Your surgical team will tell you which medications to continue, adjust, or pause, particularly blood thinners. Follow these instructions exactly, and ask if anything is unclear. Confirm your fasting instructions, which usually mean no food or drink for a set period before surgery. Arrange your logistics: how you will get to and from the hospital, who will be with you, and any help you will need at home in the first days afterward.

The Night Before

Follow your fasting instructions carefully from the specified time. Get a good night's sleep if you can. Lay out everything you need to bring, and prepare any documents. Keeping things simple and organised the night before reduces stress on the day itself.

The Morning Of

Continue fasting as instructed. Take only the medications your team has approved, with a small sip of water if permitted. Wear comfortable, loose clothing, and leave jewellery and valuables at home. Arrive on time, or a little early, so you are not rushed.

What to Bring to Hospital

  • A valid photo ID and any hospital paperwork
  • Your medication list and any current medications
  • Comfortable clothing and basic toiletries for your stay
  • A list of contacts and any questions for the team
  • A trusted family member or friend to accompany you

Mental Preparation

Preparation is not only physical. Understanding what will happen, knowing what to expect during recovery, and having your questions answered all reduce anxiety and help you approach surgery with a calm, confident frame of mind. If anything is worrying you, raise it with your surgeon beforehand. A clear understanding is one of the best forms of preparation there is. Good preparation is one of the few parts of the surgical journey entirely within your control, and using it well sets the stage for the best possible outcome.
